So I should have logged in the first time I tried to post this, because now it is pending review. But as I am a member, here we go again:

I couldn't find any appropriate message to attach my blog to, so I made this one so that I could 'blogit'. My blog is about the blue jays, but of course it will diverge from that, especially depending on who they play. This first blog is just some general discussion of three Jays players - Lilly, Rios, and Towers. I'll discuss day to day things as well, just not this time. Enjoy.

Well, the Blue Jays need a representative here. This is only my first blog though, so bear with me for the time being. What is first on my list? Well, Ted Lilly seems like the spot of bright news you might not have heard. Lilly is ahead of Halladay in terms of performance so far this year. I’m sure that will change, but it could be closer than you’d expect. He’s faced some damn good lineups (Yankees, Red Sox, Orioles) and handled them easily. His biggest problem has been the longball – it seems like most of the runs he’s given up have come off that. He’s currently 4-2, a 3.24 era, 32k in 41.2 innings pitched; his whip is a little high at 1.46 but expect that to go down if he can keep this up.
Next on my list … Rios … everyone should already be aware of the numbers he has put up so far – he is entering tonight’s play (May 13, 2006) second in the AL in batting average at .364, 21 runs scored, 24 rbis, 7 home runs, and a .692 slugging percentage. Currently he’s in a bit of a slide. He’s gone 1-4 five games straight and then last night went 0-3. This slide could continue for a while longer, and if it does, I would recommend picking up Rios. He is not a fluke, and will have a very good year. This is not the same Alexis Rios of last year. The past two years he has been a disappointment at the plate - everyone expected Rios to be a superstar and up until this year he has not hit like one, especially lacking the power that his size would lead you to believe he has. However, the only reason I can say he has been “underperforming” is that he is one of those classic five-tool players, a first round draft pick in 1999. Being a five-tool player is not a guarantee, but it is a sign of great potential, which he wasn’t reaching. But that is over now. His swing has changed significantly from last year, and you can see the improvement it’s made by the way the ball flies off his bat - everything he hits is a line-drive, and the power which was missing before is without a doubt there. I see big things for Rios.
Josh Towers. How terrible is he. I would just like to say that nothing has hurt the Jays this season like Josh Towers has. He is the reason the Jays’ record is misleading for how good they have been hitting and pitching in general. Towers is 0-7 in 7 starts, he’s pitched 30.1 innings, given up 54 hits, has a 10.90 era, and a 2.19 whip. The 0-7 record is entirely deserved. Every game except the last one (he went sour in the fourth in that one) Towers has gotten knocked around in the first and second inning, big time knocked around. It’s tough even for the Blue Jays to come back when they are down by a lot of runs after the first inning, especially when it happens as regular as garbage day. The Jays record is totally marred by Towers 0-7 start. They have 16 losses and he has 7 of them. He is almost out of chances too – if he doesn’t figure it out soon, good bye! I like Josh Towers, but the Jays cannot afford to keep letting him start – it’s lunacy. If he doesn’t turn it around soon, I expect Burnett’s replacement Casey Jansen will take Towers’ place when Burnett comes back. Until Burnett’s return though, another rookie will probably be called up. That is, if Josh Towers does not pick it up this week.
That’s it for now. I could ramble for days.
